Redwoods This is the Redwood Forest / The whispering trees superbly dressed, / Stand like a sentinel band / To guard this wonderland. // In robes of brown and green / They stand majestic as a queen. / Their lofty tops kiss the blue of the sky / While giant arms greet the passer by. // Extending along our Pacific Coast / No other clime, this tree can boast. / Here you may find solace from all ills / Among Sequoias old as the hills. / Yes, old when Christ came to earth / To redeem sinners by his birth. // Here, beneath their sheltering arms, / Come peace and strength, from all alarms. / A peace so sweet, the troubled soul, / Never more will pay a toll. // All the towers man has wrought, / Are nothing compared with what thou brought; / Grandeur, strength, health, all these: / What more could Sequoia do to please? // Here I will rest beneath their sheltering shade / when length of days begin to fade. / Till in the twilight of my life / I hear them whisper peace, not strife. / And when I have said, "Good-bye to all," / May redwood leaves be my pall.
